The Dillards—Rodney Dillard, Doug Dillard, Dean Webb, and Mitch Jayne—relocated to Los Angeles from Missouri in 1962. Experienced bluegrass musicians, they immediately began headlining renowned L.A. club the Ash Grove and signed with Elektra Records. “The Rose” (starring Bette Midler-Fansite) was released in 1979. Rodney Dillard, Doug Dillard, and Byron Berline got the opportunity to play the backup band for Harry Dean Stanton. The project started out as a dramatized biography of Janis Joplin but they had to “generalize” it after the Janis Joplin Estate wouldn’t sign off. We’re onscreen for about ten minutes or so.
