It’s part three of weed week here at Powers plants! Today we’re learning about how to use our plans to create a living mulch. Living mulch does exactly the same thing as shredded hardwood, mulch, and a whole lot more! 1. Creates a weed barrier 2. Retains soil moisture 3. Consistent aesthetic 4. Adds organic matter into the soil 5. Plant roots add beneficial soil microbes 6. Attracts beneficial insects: POLLINATORS! 7. Filters ground water before hitting lakes and streams which eventually becomes

There are lots of weeds that have germinated in September and October and will over winter and start growing again in late winter early spring. It’s best to inspect and get on top of removing these leaves now before they get larger and make your work a lot harder in the spring. #gardentips #gardeningtips #weeding #fallgarden | Amy Powers

Don’t start this mowing season with dull mower blades! Take last year’s blade and a brand new matching blade, to the hardware store or your local sharpening business. Once those two blades are sharp, put one of them on and leave the other one on deck. After one month of mowing switch the blades and take the used one back to the sharpener again. Repeat monthly to continue making sharp healthy cuts on your grass. | Amy Powers

Manually pollinating your squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, melons parentheses (this includes those zucchinis!) will give you consistently straight, large, healthy fruit. You need to first identify the difference between a male and female flower. Male flowers grow on long thin stems, and inside the flower they have a straight anther, covered in yellow pollen. For most of these types of plants, there are male flowers produced first, and usually there are more male flowers than female flowers. Female f

If you’re peony buds are starting to swell up and change color, you need to give them a gentle squeeze to see if they are ready to be cut and brought in your house. If they are hard as a rock like mine are they are not ready to be harvested. Give them a gentle squeeze, and try to snip them before the flowers fully open. That way they will last in the vase longer. | Amy Powers

Fall is the time to get a layer of organic material on your beds. This organic material will start to break down during the winter months and the microbes that break the material down are going to recycle nutrients back into your soil. This is a great way to get your soil ready for your plants to thrive in in spring! | Amy Powers

It is crucial for all of us to understand the energy systems in our plants so that we can work with the energy systems and help keep our plants alive longer. Once late August comes, and the sun angle starts to drop in the sky, the days start to shorten and temperatures start to drop. These cues are recognized by the plant, and the plant starts to prepare for dormancy. The number one driver of fall energy in plants, is food storage. The plant is trying to maximize every bit of photosynthesis it c

When working around hard, scape features, you want to use your plant material to soften the hard lines. This client has existing boxwoods that will get 3 to 4 feet tall and wide but since she kept trimming them, she’s not able to see that natural evergreen leaf through her windows. They are hiding behind the wall. I want her to let those boxwoods grow another 6 to 8 inches tall so when she looks out her windows, she doesn’t just see hard stone everywhere and nothing natural. we will re-purposed

I’m so tired of not knowing enough about where my water comes from, storm water changing precipitation around the world, so I asked my son’s hydrology professor if he would let me interview him. We scheduled 90 minutes and talked for almost 3 hours! My mind was blown about how little I know. I hope many of you listen to this interview and learn something too. There’s much we can do in our gardens to help. I can’t always respond to comments so for those of you that are experienced gardeners, plea

My client has a very flat backyard that does hold quite a bit of water when it rains. There is a lot of clay soil back here and we needed to make a wise tree selection as the trees that the builder put in this area died within two years. So we selected an autumn blaze maple, which is a very sturdy hybrid, native to this region of northern Illinois. Autumn blaze maple is a naturally occurring hybrid of red, maple and silver maple. Autumn blazes, will have a very strong branch attachment of the re

It is critical during rain, storms that our Landscapes can hold as much water as possible before excess runs into rivers, lakes, and streams. It’s even better if the water is being filtered as it is being slowed down, and that can be done by plants! For those of us that live in the Midwest, where the topography is very flat and we are prone to flooding, these types of stormwater management systems are critical to avoid massive flooding. I can’t always respond to comments so for those of you that

Time to force your amaryllis bulbs into dormancy in late August. Put them in a cool dry dark location and stop watering them. The green leaves will die back on their own. I will be putting mine in the basement. I will leave them there for 10 weeks minimum which would take me to the first week of November. At that point once you are ready start watering them again and bring them up into a room temperature sunny area. They will take 4 to 6 weeks to bloom. I will probably bring mine up closer to Th
