Waymo has gotten the green light from New York City to start testing autonomous vehicles on its streets.

New Yorkers have been spotting Waymos—with their distinctive, rotating laser sensors on top—driving across Manhattan as the autonomous vehicle company tests in the nation’s largest city, though they will still have human drivers for the foreseeable future.

It's the first permit of its kind, and a crucial step along the path toward launching a true robotaxi service in the Big Apple.
