A correction officer convicted of beating and choking a Black inmate at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Oneida County was sentenced Thursday to 37 months in prison.

A Florida man was sentenced Wednesday to nine years in prison for a vehicle crash that killed a 31-year-old pedestrian in Passaic County six years ago. A jury found Alvin Mootoo, 53, of Orlando, guilty on May 19 in the death of Jorge Alberto Pena Mesa, 31, of Newark. The fatal crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, 2019.

A woman who was jailed for stirring up racial hatred in the aftermath of the Southport attack has been released from prison. Lucy Connolly, 42, whose husband serves on Northampton Town Council, pleaded guilty in September after posting the expletive-ridden message on X the day three girls were stabbed in Southport in July 2024.

Three samples collected on July 29 from two cells and a kitchen faucet at the prison tested above the federal safety threshold.
