Residents across western Japan were treated to a dazzling celestial display as a brilliant fireball streaked across the night sky on August 19. The phenomenon, identified by experts as an exceptionally bright meteor, was spotted by many in the Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures.

A large fireball made night into day for a split second across western Japan. The Washington Post said it was believed to have been a meteor that streaked across the dark sky at about 11:08 p.m. local time Tuesday.
