Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) announced his run on Thursday to replace Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for the Senate next year. Reports surfaced earlier this month that Roy was considering a bid for the statewide office.

“The Ten Commandments are a cornerstone of our moral and legal heritage,” Paxton said in a statement Wednesday.

A federal judge in Texas temporarily halted on Wednesday a state law that would have required the Ten Commandments to be visibly displayed in every public school classroom by Sept. 1.

One pastor plaintiff, Griff Martin, said displaying the Ten Commandments was “un-American and un-Baptist” since it violated the bedrock principle of his family’s Baptist heritage.

The judge accused the attorney general of “attempting to use the legal system to impinge on Powered by People’s constitutionally protected activity.”
