The San Francisco 49ers are bringing back a familiar face under center. According to the Athletic's Matt Barrows, the 49ers are signing quarterback Nate Sudfeld after Sudfeld threw in a wide receiver workout Monday.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday the return of quarterback Nate Sudfeld via a one-year deal, placing running back Patrick Taylor Jr. (shoulder) on season-ending injured reserve.

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Nate Sudfeld signed with the San Francisco 49ers and will view for the chance to back up Brock Purdy.

This is a significant blow to the 49ers' RB room since Taylor had secured a spot as a reliable third or fourth option who contributed on special teams. He posted a career-high 109 yards on 17 carries in San Francisco's Week 18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals last season.

Sudfeld spent the 2021 campaign in the 49ers organization. After starting the season on the practice squad, he was elevated to the active roster after Trey Lance went down with a knee injury. Sudfeld stuck around for the rest of the season,
