Yes, the DMSP satellite is losing its live data feed, but forecasting is not collapsing. Yes, it’s a loss, but not a collapse. DMSP gave us valuable information, but it was just one piece of a much bigger system: GOES, JPSS, Hurricane Hunters, radar, buoys, GPS, and advanced models are still fully active. JPSS satellites (like NOAA-20 and Suomi-NPP): Carry microwave instruments (ATMS) similar to DMSP’s — can also peer through clouds to see precipitation structure and moisture inside hurricanes.
